Mike Nerheim, of Gurnee, a former assistant state’s attorney now in private practice, said Tuesday he plans to run as a Republican candidate to replace Mike Waller, the long-time GOP incumbent who won’t seek re-election in 2012. Two other candidates, a Republican and a Democrat, have also announced candidacy.

“I think [state’s attorney] is the most important state-level office in government,” Nerheim said. “If people have to have contact with the office, whether as a victim, a witness or even a defendant, it’s very important that everybody feels they’re going to be treated fairly.”

To make that happen, Nerheim said he’d conduct in-house training sessions with all assistant state’s attorneys so they could learn from each other’s expertise.
