John Marshall second-year students Vernita Cockrell and Alexzandria Johnson were awarded scholarships from the Black Women Lawyers’ Association. They were honored at a reception held on January 4, 2018. Cockrell and Johnson were two of eleven students selected by BWLA this year.

BWLA provides several scholarships to deserving law students twice per year – once in the Fall in the form of book scholarships and once in the Spring during the annual fundraiser. Last year, they awarded over $30,000.

Since its inception in 1987, BWLA’s mission has been to identify and address issues unique to African-American women lawyers, judges and those in academia. They also aim to improve the administration of justice by increasing the participation of African-American women and other minorities throughout the legal system and advancing civil and human rights.
