“We want to hold out a carrot that somebody cares about them,” Stephan Blandin, an attorney and member of the Illinois State Bar Association Diversity Pipeline Committee, said of the financial awards that ranged from $10,000 for the winner to $1,000 for semifinalists in the courtroom drama, which was the finale of the three-week camp. Gaytan won one of four other awards, good for a $5,000 tuition waiver and $150 in cash.
