The John Marshall Law School in Chicago will offer law students and attorneys the opportunity to explore Chinese intellectual property (IP) law in Beijing during June 2013.
John Marshall’s Center for Intellectual Property Law will offer full-time and part-time programs that will expose students to Chinese IP law, a field that will offer new challenges as China’s economy continues to grow. The program also will focus on transnational border issues between China and the United States.
Courses will include a survey of IP law, comparative IP protection issues in China and the United States, how new technology is affected by the First Amendment, and IP management and strategy. Students and attorneys can enroll in one or all four courses.
Students will learn about the latest developments from leading professionals in the field. Judge Edmund Chang of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois will be a featured presenter. Faculty will include Professor Shang-Jyh Liu, of National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan; Professor Doris Estelle Long, director of the Center for Intellectual Property Law at John Marshall; Professor Michael Seng, co-executive director of the Fair Housing Legal Support Center and Clinic at John Marshall; Professor Arthur Yuan (JD ’04), director of the Chinese Intellectual Property Resource Center and the Patent Clinic at John Marshall; and Professor Guangling Zhang (LLM ’01), of Renmin University of China Law School.
The program will use classrooms, housing and dining facilities on the campus of Peking University, whose campus resides on a former royal garden. Educational tours may include visits to the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), Copyright Office and at least one major IP law firm with numerous international IP clients. Sightseeing trips may include visits to the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven.
The program will be from June 2 through 29, 2013. Students can earn 1–6 credit hours in this program, and attorneys can earn CLE credits. Credit for these ABA-approved courses is offered to John Marshall students. A non-refundable $400 deposit must be paid by April 9, 2013, to reserve a place in the program.
