She was a guest on CLTV’s “Politics Tonight” program Sept. 27, 2013, addressing a judge’s ruling that allows lawsuits against the prohibition of gay marriage to go forward.

He offered comment for the Chicago Tribune Sept. 11, 2013, on two long-standing cases that were re-examined by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Conviction Integrity Unit.

Professor Doris Long

Activities

She spoke on Sept. 27, 2013, at the 87th annual meeting of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada, the premier IP association of Canada. Her topic was “Patents, Genetic Resources and Traditional Knowledge: Resolving the Challenge of Equitable Access” was part of the panel “Intellectual Property v. Cultural Property: From Colonization to Co-Existence, Ottawa, Canada.” Professor Long was the only U.S. professor invited to speak at the conference. In her presentation she addressed the often contentious inter-relationship between patents and traditional knowledge focusing on the issues that arise in the use of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge and stressed the need for sensitivity, renewable prior consent in the face of evolving research uses and the difficulty in assuring consent of those who are actually holders of the traditional knowledge at issue.

She discussed recent developments in her continuing research project regarding evolving international harmonization processes on Sept. 19, 2013, in her presentation “Creating New Geographies of “Flexible” IP Rights for the 21st Century” at the Faculty Works in Progress at The John Marshall Law School.

Activities

He has accepted an invitation from the David Davis Foundation and the Illinois State University Law Club to present a program on the career of David Davis, a nineteenth century Illinois circuit court judge and later United States Supreme Court Justice. The presentation is based on Judge McKoski’s article, Reestablishing Actual Impartiality as the Fundamental Value of Judicial Ethics: Lessons from “Big Judge Davis,” 99 Ky. L. J. 259 (2011).

Activities

They were presenters Sept. 17 and outlined library resources for basic treaty and foreign law research for the Chicago Bar Association’s International and Foreign Law Committee presentation on developing and promoting an “international law” practice: knowing where to go for help, what resources to use, how to promote your skills, and making yourself known. They demonstrated how researchers can get free foreign and international legal research assistance from the Law Library of Congress and how to do free legal research for decisions of the U.S. Court of International Trade and other tribunals.

She appeared on an Illinois State Bar Association panel discussing “Rule of Law.” The discussion was taped and made available to television stations across Illinois.

She was a panelist for the Oct. 1 program “Tips for the ‘Tween’ Pro Bono Manager” at the Virtual Pro Bono: A Desk-Top Conference hosted by the National Association of Pro Bono Professionals.

A John Marshall delegation, headed by Professor Mary Nagel, spoke at the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary’s 39th Annual Conference in Chicago on Sept. 17, 2013.  Nagel gave a short PowerPoint, and then Professors Niedwiecki, Hamann, Hodge Kleppetsch, and Contento led break-out groups on how to write review-proof decisions.
