Two Students Given ASLME Award

Skyler Silvertrust and Maria Merman were awarded the Health Law Student Award by the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics (ASLME) for having the highest grades in the Medical Negligence course at The John Marshall Law School.

Silvertrust and Merman were Medical Negligence class students of Professor Marc Ginsberg, who nominated both students for the award at the close of the spring 2011 semester. Silvertrust especially enjoyed the class with Ginsberg, who had practiced medical negligence for 30 years, because of its small size and the relaxed atmosphere.

Ginsberg said the ASLME award is designated for a 2L student with the highest grade in the health law class.

Merman found the class to be very refreshing, and enjoyed having Ginsberg as a professor. Ginsberg invited a number of speakers, including physicians, lawyers and medical negligence experts, to talk to the class about different points of view of medical negligence.

“Dean Ruebner graciously permitted the award to be given to the deserving students in my Medical Negligence class,” Ginsberg said.

The award entitles Silvertrust and Merman to many benefits, including an engraved plaque, free registration to attend the Taking the Health Law Career Path conference at DePaul University Oct. 21 and a one-year ASLME membership. The membership includes a subscription to Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics, and American Journal of Law & Medicine, discounts for conferences and webinars, and more.

Both Silvertrust and Merman say they are happy, grateful and humbled to win the award, and believe it has opened the possibility of specializing in medical malpractice.
